Description
Some recent snow gave me this opportunity and I was Lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time as the fog lifted in Sedona’s red rock country .Sedona is a town that lies in 2 counties, Coconino, and Yavapai in the high desert area of northern Arizona. The main attraction of the area is the red rocks, which are primarily composed of Permian Coconino sandstone, as well as the red sandstones of the Permian Schnebly Hill Formation. The many formations, cliffs, rocks, cliffs, even Snoopy Rock, lite up in reds and oranges when the sun hits them in sunrise and sunset. The rocks come from 8 to 10 million years ago. Geologic evidence suggests the formation of Oak Creek Canyon just north of Sedona along the Oak Creek Fault about 8 to 10 million years ago. The walls of the canyon, which have been eroded by wind, water, and time are enchanting. Between 6 to 8 million years ago, the fault became active and the canyon started to change with the result being the west rim is 700 feet higher than the east side.
Sedona is so popular with visitors that only the Grand Canyon gets more visitors. The red rocks are serene, calling, and calming. There is something for everyone here, with numerous campgrounds , hiking and mountain bike trails, and majestic vistas. Some of the more popular trails are Bell Rock, Red Rock Crossing, Westfork, Loy Canyon, and Huckabee just to name a few. Sedona is home to several outdoor stores, and one camera store, Rollies, which was used as part of the movie props for Broken Arrow filmed here in Sedona. Every Feburary , Sedona hosts its’ International Film Festival which seems to grow larger and more popular every year. Sedona was home to more than 60 Hollywood movies from the early days of film through the 70,s. Recently, the movie “Sedona “ was filmed here as well. Sedona has a typical high desert climate with about 19 inches of rain, although there is plenty of weather to capture your attention. All in all, a treasure trove of wonderful memories awaits you in Red Rock Country
