Description
A few days back, I went on a hike with my friend David to Deer Creek in downtown Nevada City. It was a little tricky to find, but well worth it! See the Victorian California Fall Colors Tour for a guided walk of historic architecture and established trees.
In almost no time, you can be out of town on the Tribute Trail and walking in a quiet rural neighborhood near Deer Creek. For first-timers, finding the trail is a bit of a challenge and numerous sections make for some planning before heading out.
A popular route departs from the Miner’s Foundry on Spring Street in downtown Nevada City, west onto Factory Street. The road will soon curve to the left, the pavement will end and you will be on a one-lane dirt road (Wyoming Street) that parallels Deer Creek. In about 0.3 mile, the dirt road will come out onto the pavement of Old Downieville Highway which you can follow another 0.3 mile to where Champion Road goes down to your left. Look for trail signs, follow the switchback dirt trail through the woods and listen for the sound of Deer Creek’s water. A large sign with map of the trail system will help you find your way.
This trail memorializes the early contributions of native Nisenan and Chinese people to the history of this place. A suspension bridge – Nisenan Tribute Bridge or “Anqkula Seo” spans a beautiful section of Deer Creek, connecting to the Environs Trail on the other side.
