Walking along West Cliff Drive in Santa Cruz, one is bound to be captivated by many numerous folks surfing away. I captured this gal surfing away just south of Natural Bridges State Beach, which is one of my favorites beaches for fun in the sun in the Santa Cruz area. Santa Cruz is the county seat and largest city in Santa Cruz county with a population around 60,000. It is located on the north end of Monterey Bay about a 2 hour drive south of San Francisco. Santa Cruz is a wonderful beach town, known for great beaches, the boardwalk, wonderful climate, its incredible coastline, redwood forests and its progressive attitude. Santa Cruz has 11 world class surf breaks including Pleasure point and Steamer Lane. The surfing museum near the Lighthouse on West Cliff Drive overlooks Steamer Lane, which is a surfing area for the experienced surfer only. As much as I enjoyed the museum, the action in the water was not to be missed and it made for wonderful photography. One hint for fellow photo lovers is to bring your polarizing filter. Santa Cruz is also popular for other water sports like paddle boarding, sailing, diving, swimming, fishing, and bicycling to name a few. It has awesome beaches, such as Natural Bridges, Seabright, and the boardwalk area. There is a neat wharf to view creatures in and out of the water. Harbor seals can be seen in plenty, and are fun for the kids to watch. The city is a center of liberal progressive activism as well . It was one of the first cities to approve marijuana for medicinal uses, and has a sprinkling of nude beaches as well. Santa Cruz is also home to University of California Santa Cruz, an excellent research and educational college. Its campus is quite beautiful as well. It is a great place to live or vacation with bike lanes, and plenty to do for a visitor looking for good food, and a grand time!
