Description
Cathedral Rock is one of the gems that is found in Northern Arizona's high desert. It is a captivating beauty of red rock sandstone, weathered by time and the elements that awaits you in Sedona, Arizona
In Sedona’s magnificent red rock country, Cathedral Rock a stunning masterpiece of red rock monolith, will touch your heart, and calm your inner self. One of the wonderful things about this beauty of nature is its ability to charm you with its shadows, reflections, and variety of colors. When the light hits Cathedral, one of the most visited spots of Sedona, it glows and the red and orange sandstones are nature in the raw. In the dry and arid conditions of northern Arizona, the light is always changing. Sedona is second only to the Grand Canyon in visitors. Whether you climb the face of Cathedral on the east side to the notch, or approach it thru Red Rock Crossing on the west side, the views are splendid and inspiring. Both sides give you access to the creek that flows at its’ base with many folks enjoying the cooling waters of Oak Creek at the crossing. The Red Rocks are a mixture of red and orange sandstones called the Schnebly Hill Formation. This formation is found primarily in the Sedona area. The Sandstones was deposited here about 250 to 300 million years ago. My favorite time of the day to visit Cathedral is late afternoon in the summer. In winter, the later part of the day is suggested, unless it snowed the night before. If it snowed, go out when you think the fog starts to lift. Whether you are looking for an easy or strenuous hike, some mountain biking, awesome photography, or a serene, calming place to reach your inner self, Cathedral Rock is a great place to start or finish.
