Several weeks ago, i was wandering around Sedona, lookin for how the Light would hit, and where i would need to be, and took a chance on Cockscomb Butte, and I was justly rewarded with an awesome sky! Cockscomb Butte is located on the Southern end of Sedona, The Cockscomb is one of the last prominent summits that you will encounter in this beautiful area if you are heading south.
This is a great climb because it gives you some great up close views of the cliffs and spires that form the Cockscomb. You will even get to see some Sinagua ruins if you hike along the base of it’s cliffs. From its trail and from its summit, you can see all of nearby Doe Mountain, Bear Mountain, and Capitol Butte as well as other prominent red rock formations. The beginning of the trail starts gradually, and then you pretty much go straight uphill nearly 600 feet for the last quarter of a mile until you reach the summit. I ventured out West in the early 70's. After several trips to Northern Arizona with it's Majestic Skies, Red Rocks, and wide open spaces, I realized I wanted to settle here. Well, Fate came into the picture and numerous stops came along. I ventured to San Juan Islands, British Columbia, Oregon, Utah, Northern and Southern California, and even Southern Arizona. Yet , I felt unsettled looking for home to sink roots. Finally Sedona tugged hard , and I settled here in the mid 90's and rediscovered my sense of Gratitude and Enjoyment. Well I,m mostly retired now, traveling more, and have relocated in an old mining town in the Sierras; Time for change; new areas to explore.
