Description
Last week, I was hiking with my Tour Guide, and dear friend Nancy in the high country of Mount Rose. The trail was fairly level, with wonderful views, snow on the ground, and small but beautiful semi frozen falls at the end of 2.4 miles. area.
The hike to Galena Creek Falls is an easy 2.5 miles one way, with very minimal elevation gain. Just follow the marked route to Mt Rose summit. Even though the elevation of the hike is high, almost entirely above 9000 ft., it is not a factor because the hike is very gentle. However, my son thought it was more like a "moderate" hike, so perhaps you should take what I say with a grain of salt. Ha ha. Along the way you will see some nice views of Lake Tahoe, and the mountain (Mt Rose) looms over you to the right. In the late spring/early summer, there are apparently plenty of wildflowers, especially near the falls.
It is difficult to see the entire 60 ft. high waterfall from the base, as the very top section is a bit out of view due to the closeness and angle, but you can easily get to the bottom of the falls which is gorgeous. It is definitely better to see it in spring or early summer, but it should have decent flow in late summer (which is when I was here).
If you have the time you can continue to the top of Mt Rose. It would not be "easy" anymore, as it is quite a trek to the top, but I think it would be a great hike, and I'd love to do it sometime. It is also a very popular hike, especially on weekends. You could also make a loop hike instead of going back the same way. The loop trail goes to the top of the waterfall, and then back around Tamarack Peak to the south. That is a bit longer as well, but not too much or too difficult.
