Description
I recently had the opportunity to take my first whale photography tour. It was most enjoyable. The tour was based in Victoria with BC Whale Watching, and they did an awesome job. We traveled out to the San Juan Islands to find their pod. Orca, or killer whales are the largest of the dolphins and one of the world’s most powerful predators. They fed on marine mammals like sea lions, seals, and other whales. They have teeth up to 4 inches long. They will also eat squid, fish, and seabirds. Orcas are highly social and composed of matrilineal family groups.
They frequent cold coastal waters, but can be found from the Polar regions to the Equator.
Killer whales hunt in pods, with family groups up to 40 creatures. They are resident and transient pod populations of killer whales. They different groups prey on different groups, different animals, and use different techniques to capture their prey. Their average life span is 50 to 80 years.
Whales made a variety of distinctive noises that its members can recognize even at a distance. They use Echolocation to communicate and hunt, making sounds that travel underwater until they encounter objects. The sound then bounces back revealing their location, size, and shape.
Mothers give birth every 3 to ten years after 17 months of pregnancy.
They are recognizable by their black and white coloring. They are intelligent, and weigh up to 6 tons.
