With winter on the horizon, it is always fun to wait for a snowstorm, and catching what you want to capture went the storm clears. This happened to me a few years back at Cathedral Rock where I lived for24 years. Cathedral Rock is a natural sandstone butte on the Sedona skyline and one of the most-photographed sights in Arizona, United States.[3] The rock formation is located in the Coconino National Forest in Yavapai County, about a mile (1.6 km) west of Arizona Route 179, and about 2.5 miles (4.0 km) south of the "Y" intersection of Routes 179 and 89A in uptown Sedona. The summit elevation of Cathedral Rock is 4,967 feet (1,514 m).[1]
The Cathedral Rock trail (USFS Trail #170) is a popular short, steep ascent from the Back O' Beyond trailhead to the saddle points or "gaps" in Cathedral Rock.[4]
Geologically, Cathedral Rock is carved from the Permian Schnebly Hill formation, a redbed sandstone formed from coastal sand dunes near the shoreline of the ancient Pedregosa Sea...
I ventured out West in the early 70's. After several trips to Northern Arizona with it's Majestic Skies, Red Rocks, and wide open spaces, I realized I wanted to settle here. Well, Fate came into the picture and numerous stops came along. I ventured to San Juan Islands, British Columbia, Oregon, Utah, Northern and Southern California, and even Southern Arizona. Yet , I felt unsettled looking for home to sink roots. Finally Sedona tugged hard , and I settled here in the mid 90's and rediscovered my sense of Gratitude and Enjoyment. Well I,m mostly retired now, traveling more, and have relocated in an old mining town in the Sierras; Time for change; new areas to explore.
